Career Paths for Culinary Professionals

Do you love to cook? Are you addicted to Food Network and cooking competitions? Do you love trying new recipes, techniques and trends? Maybe it’s time to turn your passion for food into a culinary career. There are a variety of careers you can pursue that will put you on the path to a future in the food industry. Read on to discover some of the opportunities available to culinary professionals, and see which one is the best fit for you.

Chef

If you dream of becoming a professional chef, there are a wide range of exciting settings to choose from. Whether you are a sous chef or executive chef, you can work in food halls, food trucks, casual franchises, fine dining restaurants, catering services, hotels and resorts, and more. When you get a proper culinary arts education, you’ll gain the skills you need to create fresh, flavorful, and memorable meals that will keep people asking for more.

Research Chef

A research chef is part chef and part scientist, experimenting with different foods, flavors, recipes and techniques to create new cooking methods or food and beverage products. For example, a research chef worked with the inventors or marketers of the Instant Pot or Air Fryer to come up with recipes that work well with these products. Research chefs also invent new food products, such as meatless burgers or cauliflower pizza crusts. If you enjoy the science of cooking, this might be the right career path for you.

Baker or Pastry Chef

As most home chefs know, cooking and baking are two very different disciplines. While cooking usually allows you to play with different ingredients and imprecise amounts, baking is more technical and analytical. As a baker or pastry chef, you’ll get to put your pastry and baking knowledge and talents to work as a restaurant pastry chef, artisanal baker, or wedding cake designer. You could even open your own shop specializing in treats like cupcakes, gluten-free goodies and more.

Restaurant Owner or Manager

If you have a passion for food, but also a strong business acumen, you may enjoy working as a restaurant manager or even opening your own restaurant. Your background with food will give you the knowledge you need to ensure that your cooks are working well and using the proper techniques and high-quality ingredients to produce a memorable dining experience for your customers.

Food and Beverage Writer

People love talking, reading, and writing about food. With a background in the culinary arts and some writing skills, you could become a restaurant critic, a cookbook writer, or a food blogger. If you enjoy doing research and immersing yourself in the food industry, you can become a subject experts in the field.

These are just some of the many opportunities available to you when you train to become a culinary professional. Other positions include a culinary instructor, a beverage professional (sommelier, wine maker, brewer or barista), a nutritionist, a food stylist or photographer, and more!
